Hi Simon,
the desktop window is a widget you can use to easily place other windows
etc. inside. The difference to any application class is, that the
application defines the overall type of your qooxdoo application, and
acts as the entry point (aka "main" routine). The desktop window would
be created from this application instance. For your project, I would
suggest to use qx.application.Standalone
