Hi,
you can override the placeholder's color by redefining the key
"text-placeholder" in your application's color theme.
This color definition is accessed directly from qx.ui.form.AbstractField
since it's a global style for all text fields and text areas. So it
doesn't follow the usual path of appearance -> decorator -> color,
making it a bit hard to find, as you've noticed.
