UUID.randomUUID() is really slow, it's much faster to generate a single
namespace UUID with randomUUID() and use that + a counter with
UUID.nameUUIDFromBytes(byte[] name).
Because the uniqueness properties of this other scheme might be different, we
should have the uuid generation strategy be configurable.
