This NPE is generated when using the main toolbar refresh button or or file
menu option whilst not having previously selected something in the navigation
tree. The best (possibly only?) example of this is to simply start the
management console up and press the refresh button or use the file menu refresh
option before doing anything with the tree.
The attached patch does indeed solve the issue, by making the offending refresh
method return immediately.
