I was always getting error messages like that whenever an mbox started
getting over 40M in size or there about. I finally gave up and
installed Dovecot. For what ever reason, it never chocked on a large mbox
size.

You might want to check the size of the mbox when the fault occurs. I
was not running any Symantex products either.
