Sounds like the same problem we had on the apache.org mail server when 
using pperl.

The recommended work around is to use forkserver instead.  :-)

All I see with pperl is very occasionally plugin 
count_unrecognized_commands,
hook count_unrecognized_commands returned 903

Is that OK?
