Installing qpsmtpd kills perldoc

Ok, now I have a second server where perldoc is hosed...
   perldoc README

worked just fine. Then I ran

   perl Makefile.PL
   make
   make test
   make install
   make clean

After that

   perldoc README

only returns

   No documentation found for "README".

Is this an intentional side effect of installing qpsmtpd? How can I 
repair it?
