I don't think you can just switch it to GL and call it a day. The raster engine beats GL out of the water in a lot of cases. Also, my experiments have reduced in lower quality in GL.
Also, GL does not work on my ATI hw, but works on my Nvidia. >From the research I've done and seen, it looks like spending money on CPU for the raster engine is better than spending it on the GPU.
