I don't even have an Xsession-file, so I guess this is going to be a bit of a rabbit hole.
In the meantime I can use dmenu like this, whenever a program doesn't want to launch: "someprogram > /dev/null". Not the worst workaround ever. Thank you very much for your help so far! I'll try to figure the rest out on my own and come back here in case I ever fully understand what's going on.
