Is it just one widget that you want to do this for? If so, which one? You can set the bar opacity which, I think, impacts all the widgets.
I've never tried it for widgets but I think the underlying modules that drawer the widgets do have methods that use alpha channels so it may be possible. Interested to know what the use case is here.
