I wondered about that. I would have the strongest smelling urine
sometimes and not eat or drink anything to make it that way. I have sent
urine in for cultures and nothing. The urine nice and clear but smelled so
strong. It's so strange how it happens sometimes.

Subject: Re: [QUAD-L] smelly
superpubic
I talked to my medical staff in May and still haven't found an inadequate
resolution. The smell of my urine is so bad that I wear a freezer bag over my
urine bag. Due to the volume of water I drink while I am in the chair and
because I am unable to empty my own urine, I use a modified 2000 or 4000 CC
bag. I have only been able to get the smell to go away for a few days at a
time. I believe it is probably Mountain Dew (usually drink about two a day),
but I sometimes have the problem even when I do not drink any soft drinks. My
urologists suggested drinking lemonade instead of Mountain Dew and I tried
this and unfortunately, the urine was even stronger and I was clogging the
catheters even faster. The bacterial count is not sufficient enough for them
to treated as a UTI, but the smell is significant enough that it frequently
inhibits my social interaction. I'm stopping by later this week to address
this situation again. I will let you know if they do anything different.

Its
the vapor lock... or the lack of one, my friend. If you think gases from
a bladder smell bad, you should be in the surgery room when a patient in
brought in with several bullet fragment in the lower stomach and upper
bowel. Normally, these organs operate on a closed system and when
pressures build up inside the body... nature takes over with relief. But
when you augment the bladder your bladder vents thru the area around the
superpubic cath tube. Then also consider the bladder and urine reaction
to any medicines, medication, and beverages that you might be consuming.
Oh, did I mention the bacteria that is also present in the bladder???
Yes, it can become an odor problem if not addressed. High bacteria and
infections don't make the bladder fluids any sweeter either. If yours is
too noticeable, you might want to contact your Uro an! d ask for their
assistance in suggesting the best course of action with a weatherhead or
vapor lock. Don't be surprised if they raise their eyebrow and shake
their heads.. W
