Hi Kaye,

Sorry for the late welcome.  I'm Stacy.  I just turned 31 on the 3rd and paraplegic at T 7/8 level from a rare type of encephalitis.  I just had the same surgery in May but I may have to have it again since my appendix looks like it either partly died or the incision closed where connected to the bladder.  We'll see on the 12th as I go back and have an outpatient surgery possibly done.  He's going to do an x-ray and if all goes well he's going to use a camera going through my urethra and will open up the incision where the appendix is connected to my bladder.  Unfortunately my appendix wasn't long enough for my long torso to be able to cath through my belly button but they did try.  I had to have a new stoma put in.  If the procedure doesn't go the way I want I will do the surgery again next summer after the spring semester.  It's important for me to get school over early.  I'm afraid to have the surgery don’t in the winter break as my incision got infected this time around and I was connected to the wound vac for almost a month.  If that were to happen again, I wouldn’t be able to go back to school without that wound vac attatched to me and that’s too embarrassing to handle.  When I had the surgery I also had a chait catheter put in. It's a tube connected to my large intestines to help with my bowel program.  I run 500cc's of saline through the tube and it pushes my stools through. I do run an extra 250 through after the 500 just to make sure I'm empty.  It's over so much quicker.  At least one good thing came from my not so great hospital stay and surgery.

Anyhow, sorry for the long story.  It's great to have you with us.  I look forward to reading your posts.  Enjoy your stay.

Stacy

Subject: [QUAD-L] Hi, new member, supra pubic, etc...

I hope I'm doing this right!
I've been injured for 13 years, C6.  Six months or so after my injury I had a procedure called mitrofanoff where the surgeon used my appendix to make a "tunnel" that goes from my belly button to my bladder.  So I cath via my navel.  Less chance for bacteria to be introduced, being that it's away from the vaginal area and all.  I can do it anywhere so long as I have a catheter, empty bottle and betadine swabs.  I have had my share of Utis and have minimized reoccurance (and symptoms which are enough without having the actual infection) by sticking to sterile catheters drinking lots of water and stuff and staying away from caffeine and taking cranberry capsules.

That's my experience.
