Definitely! I don't know how I survived the "initial injury" in a hospital smaller
than one unit in an apartment complex in SMALL TOWN AMERICA!
They "fiddled with me" abt three months in their small ICU unit before sending
me to a neighborhing hospital where they did my neck fusion. Did about 3 months
there before getting sent to a small Rehab Hospital in Schenectady, NY (SunnyView).
They knew very little back in '79/80. And even LITTLER compared to all they know now
and the nation having TEN *TOP 10* Rehab Hospitals specializing in SCI & MS.
My family considered sending me to Craig back then (clear across the nation) but
thought it'd be rougher on me with NO FAMILY out there.
SunnyView wasn't bad but I have nothing to compare it to. I spent approx 4 months
there and they got me all the therapy they could to reach my optimum potential. I
had a trach all that time too.
Sometimes small is better. I had ALOT of one-on-one and I was FAR from a number.
I had great physical therapists. I bumped heads with "know it all" OTs even at age 16
and not having a clue of the permanence of my condition.
And, most importantly, I had a SUPER peer counselor who fell in love with our family
and kept in touch all these yrs.
Sometimes one has to learn best by the school of hard-knocks and that is what I
was trying to get across with Mare's post. One learns more & more how their quad
body reacts as the yrs go on. Her message left more questions for us ... let alone
supplying her answers to help.
After I posted my experience with Enemeez ... she replied to that with the same
blank question. I can't help but think - is she/this for real????
I'm skeptical only because some people join lists only to jerk the people around. She
may be a real live 29 yrs post quad or we're not getting the real/whole story. :o)
Will the real Mare please step up?
