My son, Gabe has spasms. I’m not sure if that is the same. We have dealt with an issue much like this. It is ongoing so we have to stay on top of it. If I were you I’d make sure he is seeing a rehab doc that can address rehab/pain. I would get a real good behaviorist and PT working on this. If it’s physical pain, he needs to find some relief. If it’s emotional, he needs to find an out let. If it is “behavior” as the aides say, then they and the environment that he is in has created it. It is easy to create a negative behavior then blame it on the person who is suffering. I would suggest you find out what it is, how to treat it, then train the aides. So it doesn’t happen again after you find out I would include it as part of training. We have a packet we give all new comers and there are multiple sheets on this issue. I wish you the best of luck. It is really hard to see your child suffer and have little hope and then have people blame him/her. I used to go break things where people couldn’t hear. My therapist and husband felt that was good therapy for me. Is that appropriate? When the aides told me Gabe was spoiled at first I bought it. Then after talking to Gabe and observing I say “so what he deserves it!” Lets just help him find other things he can do when he can’t talk to us about pain or feelings. Let me know and I can send the handouts. We are fortunate that a good friend is a behaviorist and an advocate for rights. Gabe can talk to us. However, there are times when he has medical problems that keep him from talking.

Best of luck,

Lana

Subject: [QUAD-L] Question Help ASAP

Can someone explain to me what happens when my son goes into TONE or Extension. It's something he can't help says his Dr since he is mute and a quad since his Brainstem stroke. Dr says he has 3 choices, laugh, cry or go into extension when he gets frustrated. She says that too many electrical impulses go to his brain at the same time and it causes it. However some of his caregivers says he is spoiled and throwing a temper tantrum. There was a site where I could get info about this sort of thing but I forgot the name of it.  Help please.
He is 41 and 4 yrs post stroke. Is  there a medicine for this?
