On May 17, 1989, I suddenly, within minutes, went from a sharp pain in my
shoulder to becoming paralyzed from the neck down and dependent on a
ventilator to breathe due to acute idiopathic transverse myelitis. My
condition has not changed but I am otherwise in good health and grateful
for every day I am alive.
