Hi all I recently acquired a secondhand SupraExpress 288 modem "Designed exclusively for the Mac" for a non-technical work colleague. I assured her that connection would be a piece of cake but tested it first at home. Serves me right. First, the gear: a Quadra 700 running OS 7.1 and Open Transport. The modem powers up OK, and when I hit the connect button in PPP it dials the number quite happily. Then it sits for a while before telling me "The connection attempt failed. There was no answer." When I try the same procedure using my trusty USRobotics 14.4k Mac&Fax I get online with no trouble. Could it be that the Supra, which is powered by the Mac, doesn't get enough juice from a 68k machine? Another thing - the Supra came without a phone cable, so I used the one from the USR. The Supra has two sockets. I tried both in turn with no success. Should both be occupied at the same time? I also tried the SupraExpress using ConfigPPP and MacTCP on OS 7.5 and failed there too. The USRobotics functions without an Init string, but perhaps the Supra needs one? Any suggestions gratefully received. My colleague also has a Quadra (aren't office cast-offs wonderful!), although hers functions only on OS 7.5, so the ConfigPPP/MacTCP connection is probably more vital. However, if TCP/IP is the only way I can downgrade it easily enough. TIA Russell -- Quadlist is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
