I agree completely, but I dont see any need to burden a begiiner with those
details.
If they go down to their local electronics/computer shop ( Dick Smith in Oz,
I guess frys in US ) then there should be prepackaged cables for coax
networking. The shop assistant should be capable of helping. A beginner is
unlikely to try things like extending the t junction, or building their own
terminators to save money.
As far as hubs go, if I went to my local shop and bought a setup for 10bT
( off the shelf cables etc ) it would cost much more that 10b2, for 3
computers at any rate. There is no need for a hub, but by getting dual
output transceivers it is available as an option.
Going to 10bT wouldnt be a huge speed increase, but going to 10bT switched
may be worth it. Switches arent much more expensive, and will only get
cheaper. I wasnt suggesting a 10bT/10b2 hub, but allowing for a complete
overhaul in the future.
