This is my suspicion, based on the current info: being an older HD, and
being a full-height, I would bet that this HD was intended for external use.
You want to use it for internal use, which would be fine, except that the HD
is dependent on something else to terminate the chain (which it would get
via the external terminator).

1) the FH Seagate drive maybe too old for Drive Setup to see it [ * ] ; I've
had the same problem with FH Micropolis drives; use HDT or another
third-party initializer,

2) the 950 is provided with a terminator on the cable end, as are the WGS 950
and WS 9150, or any other of the 950-case machines; the terminator on the
drive should be removed if of the single- or dual-inline package type, or the
TE (terminator enable) jumper, as appropriate,

3) if ASP cannot see the drive, and Drive Setup cannot see the drive, then
the drive is probably defective; SCSI drives are required to respond to the
"read device characteristics" command even if the drive spindle motor is not
powered-up,

4) given that a drive in a 950 is required to be unterminated, there is
really no difference between an internal drive and an external drive, other
than where the drive is physically located, and

5) special note for II, IIx and IIfx users ... there existed a third-party
replacement for the drive mounting bracket which would allow a FH 5.25" drive
to be mounted internally; in this case, the drive *must* be terminated as
there is no terminator on the II-series internal cable.

[ * ] However, I always try Drive Setup (1.7.3 is a good one, and is
available for download on Apple's FTP site) and it has been able to
initialize even Seagate drives which were made for OEMs.
