I was having similar problems with my 840AV. On a cold boot, the same unique
error sound (which is in the AOL libraries as "Q840av Funky Sound") or
sometimes just a click, then everything halts. After that I could force a
restart from the keyboard (command-control-power) and boot normally. I could
also shut down, wait a few minutes, and restart.
Shifting and removing SCSI devices didn't help, nor did changing the
motherboard battery, nor did putting in a new motherboard. The problem went
away after swapping all the RAM with the RAM in my Centris 650.
The 840 is pickier about RAM, isn't it?

Eric
