I just got a Centris 650 and a non-functional Quadra 605, and would like to transplant the hard drive, the extra RAM and the VRAM from 605 into the 650. After going through several FAQs and web sites, I still have questions before proceeding:
1) Is the RAM the same between the two units? The specs say both use 80ns 72-pin SIMMs, but my 605 SIMMs are shorter than the 650. 2) Same question for VRAM. I clearly see the VRAM SIMM in the 605 (what an easy box to work on), but I am not sure where the VRAM slots are on the 650. 3) Are there any sites that describe how to work on the 650? It seems like all I need is a Philips screwdriver, and I can figure it out, but I'll take all the help I can get. 4) I have a small (1/2") drive from the 605, and the rails from a full-size defective AppleCD 300 Plus internal CD-ROM drive. I'd like to mount the small drive instead of the CD-ROM. -- What hardware do I need to "fill the space"? -- How do I change the SCSI device number? There are 2 rows of 4 pins on the front of the 605 drive, and one of the columns is shorted. I am just not sure what the new configuration should be (I recall that it can't be "zero" -- assigned to the drive already in the 650). TIA for any help.
