It does have something like that.  If it can't rebuild the directory on a
disk, what it'll let you do is preview the directory, so you can get access
to the files.  But, it'll only do that, if the drive (or floppy) is
mountable, but nothing shows up in the root folder.  At least, that's been
my experience.
