Since there was no VRAM at all installed in the machine originally, I
removed it after the problem started. I originally thought this might
have been what was causing the problem. Since then I've left it out
because I figure it's just one more variable. These are 256mb Apple
VRAM.
I have tried numerous combinations of RAM since the battery change.
Right now I am working with just one of the chips that were in the
machine when it worked. I am not experiencing any problems installing
the RAM. They go in quite easily, and are evenly and solidly seated when
I check them.
