If you really want to go places, stick in a 5500/6500 logic board - this'll boot just fine and will allow the HFS+ format, without any power supply issues. Have already done this a few times and, using OS9 helper, an old 630 box will happily run 9.2.2 - it's then a 5500/6500 and no longer a Quadra! Be aware that you can't do the same thing with a 5400/6400 board! The only downside is the price of 5v, 168 pin RAM. Please email me off-list if you want to take this suggestion any further. With some fairly minimal expense, your upgrade attempt will pay real dividends.

Hello, everyone.
I'm attempting to resurrect an old Quadra 630, so far without success. I put
in a 4GB hard drive from a beige G3 and installed Mac OS 8.1 on it, but it
won't boot. I get the happy Mac for a moment, then the question mark icon.
It boots fine from the Mac OS 8.1 CD. The HD mounts with no problem, and
Disk First Aid says it's OK. (The drive was initialized with the standard
file system, not the extended, so that it could boot a non-PowerPC Mac.)
The battery is dead (a new one is on order), but I thought that this model
Mac would start up without a good battery.
Any ideas?
TIA,
