Subject: LC and LC 475

I have just found these old LCs in one of our laboratory.

I would like to rejuvenate them so that students=20
and lab assistant can use them.

In our environment we have already moved to OS X,=20
airport etc..., however I believe these vintage=20
Macs are worth a few bucks for upgrading them.

So the idea is to upgrade the LC with the Sonnet=20
PrestoPlus thing, but for the LC 475 (a.k.a.=20
Quadra 605, Performa 475 or 476 ) there are no=20
PPC upgrade still available.

Where should I look for, for a Quadra 605 upgrade to a PPC?

The Q605 is possibly the best of the pizza box (case-style) Macs. It's a great little machine with surprisingly good performance (for such an inexpensive when new machine), just the way it is. It is also very easy (with a tiny bit of soldering) to speed it from 25MHz to 33 MHz. <http://homepage.mac.com/schrier/mhz.html> There is also a 40 MHz upgrade, but it often requires replacing a chip which may not be easy to find.

In this day and age, PPC upgrades for older machines have achieved "rare" status on the used market and machines such as the PM6100 are so common that folks find them difficult to sell. Of course, you situation may be somewhat different in Italy. I bet PPC upgrades are as rare there as here though.

The point is that an entire PM 6100 is cheaper than a PPC upgrade for the Q605. And a PM6100 is the closest machine to what you end up with if you upgrade a Q605 wiht a PPC card. Actually, the PM 6100 is a significantly better machine than an upgraded Q605.

Ethernet cards for the Q605 are of the LC PDS Ethernet type. They fit in the PDS (processor direct slot) of the Mac LC. The Q605 uses the same PDS slot as the LC. The Asante brand are the MacCon-i LC-10T, MacCon LC10TIII, and MacCon-i LC-TN/10T. There are a couple of other models but they are thinnet or thicknet only. Apple, Farallon and Dayna also made LC PDS ethernet cards.

The cards are commonly available on Ebay but getting them to Italy may be a challenge. I've mailed small padded envelopes to Italy without any trouble, so it should just be a matter of finding an Ebay seller who ships internationally.

As for the LC, your best bet is to get a Q605 motherboard, fan and speaker for the LC. Probably cheaper just to get another whole Q605 (under $10 plus shipping) or a PM6100.
