Alberto Ricci did SoundEffects as a shareware version

version SoundMaker [which I don't know if it is to be found anywhere except
that I have it], these programs do record AIFF well and also one can do a lot
of processing on the sounds.

Soundmagic FX <http://mnorris.wellington.net.nz/soundmagic/> works with the
above two as plugins.
