Sorry, I thought the groups were separate.  Holding down the shift key 
kept the launcher from showing as well as the message that the clock 
was wrong.  The cursor is still frozen, but I am able to use the 
direction keys to go back and forth between the hard disk and trash 
icons.  Thanks,

Try holding down the shift key (use the left one to be sure).  This
will allow the Mac to boot without loading a bunch of stuff during
startup.  Do you know which launcher you're using (eg. the one
which came with the system software, At Ease, something which came
from a third party)?

a response from one, then go on to another.
