These old hard drives do go bad, often! If you have nothing to special on the hard drive, just replace it with a known good similar drive. If you have files you absolutely need, I understand you can often revive a dead hard drive for a small amount of time by freezing it. One way or the other, you need a different, known good hard drive. Good luck!
