the only thing with openbsd is they have no platform maintainer. also the fact that it supports less hardware than netbsd or linux is another issue on mac68k at least. there is also a wider netbsd/mac68k userbase and therefore more incentive to fix problems with it. i ran openbsd/mac68k and run netbsd/mac68k now. they are virtually identical only netbsd is slightly faster due to cpu optimizations which are a real must if you want to do anything productive on it like a web server or email server.

Subject: Re: [q] Best Unix for 68k and PPC Macs?

My General experience with MacPPC is flip a coin for
BSD or Linux. Both have great support. I have run
OpenBSD and NetBSD--personal preference as to which
you choose. I prefer Open :-)

Linux on PPC is a simpler choice. The only acceptable
choices are gentoo and debian. And most people don't
like to wait for gentoo, so....

But I would say avoid YDL like the plague. 2.3 and 3
were okay, but it felt too much like a half assed
attempt. PPC Debian/Gentoo feel like i386, Sparc64,
etc. Its just the same.

On Mac68k, I've run Open, Net, and Debian. And I
think those are your only choices. Again, my choice
is Open, but if you want that, you'll need one of the
most recent snap shots to run. There were some
strange problems in 3.5 and 3.6 release. They have
since been resolved. Personally, I ran a quadra800
with OpenBSD 3.3 as my firewall since 3.3 was released
right up until a month ago. Thats over 18 months.
Rebooted only when a new kernel was installed.

i know the guy who runs ziaspace.com. the url
mentioned below. i use
netbsd/mac68k daily. it runs my email server. and
netbsd/macppc runs
my webserver.

Hi,

I am successfully running NetBSD on my 030 and 040
based MAC's
(LCIII/LC450, LC475, Quadra 700). For the 040LC
there is now NetBSD
mk68k-softfloat.

More about this one can find at:
    http://www.netbsd.org/Ports/mac68k/
(the systems with 040LC one can download the
system from here:
ftp://ftp.ziaspace.com/pub/NetBSD/m68k.)

For the PPC version look at:
    http://www.netbsd.org/Ports/macppc/

There is a lot of documentation and one can browse
the mailing lists
archives to look for ideas etc.

Regards,

G. Ardelean

Anyone got any advice or personal experience
running a *nix OS on 68k
Macs in particular, but also PPC Macs? I'd love
to hear about your
successes, failures, thoughts, etc.

If there's any decent objective FAQ on this
subject just direct me to
that instead.

TIA,
 Jamie Kahn Genet
