This is what's done on the commercial side. (e.g., I've used Berkeley DB for this in the past, but the selection of this was done in the late 90s.)

I don't know about "long term". It'd be good to discuss and agree on architecture stuff for the long-term in advance, but often people go and implement behind closed doors, and then come to the list with code.
