My Xtreme shows gasping empty The Ford Design Standard for fuel gauges is that at the point it starts to show empty there should be enough fuel left to cover 50 miles. It is obviously easier to tell the point at which this happens if you have a low fuel warning light. In production Ford cars I have on occasion driven the car to the point when there was less than one litre of fuel left in the tank. The possibility of debris in the bottom of the tank is one that should be taken into account before trying this.
