Just thought I would post a quick message as this topic seems to come
up on a regular basis. I have converted my 2+2 to run a Escort MFI
turbo set up as some of you have seen at Stoneleigh (best quantum
award..much to my suprise!) I had a Fiesta Centre turbo tank fitted
and as lots of people have found, roundabouts and corners taken with
any sort of fun with less than 1/2 a tank of fuel would result in the
fuel pump sucking in air and the engine cutting out. I know there are
many ways to combat this issue but I chose to do a swirl pot
transplant from an old Mk4 Escort RS Turbo. It was not a big job to
cut the RS swirl pot out of the old tank and with the use of a dremal,
the fiesta centre tank soon became a convertable. a few hours steaming
the fiesta tank with 9 Bar steam and a gas test proved the tank safe
for welding then I modified the internal pipework to fit the escort
swirl pot, 20 minutes at a local welders and the job was complete.
Having just taken the car for its first test since the transplant with
the fuel guage in the red, roundabouts have never been so much fun
with so little fuel! A total success! Total cost of conversion
including parts and labour was less than £100.
I would recommend this method to overcome a common problem but safety
has to be your highest concern when grinding and welding any part of
the fuel system.

Happy quantumming
See you at Haynes next month
