I had no engine number on my replacement engine either , nothing dodgy
just rusted off, I contacted the DVLA twice by phone to speak to
different people, and despite sounding like it was the first time they
had ever heard of an engine number being illegible the two people I
spoke to gave the same advice which was to get a notification on
headed paper from a registered garage that the car with registration
number #### ### now has an engine capacity of 1597cc (or whatever)
which is no drama if you have friends in the trade.

They sent my new docs back with the old engine number stamped on -
which was a 1.1 cross flow - good job I was scrap

Regards

Justin
