Thanks for the info guys. I've checked the compression with my shiny new compression tester and found that No's 3 & 4 cylinders have no compression, didn't even register on the scale! So, tomorrow I'll take the head off and see how big the job is. It's the good lady wife's birthday today and my eldest has come home from Uni for the weekend with a broken laptop, so working on the car would probably not my wisest choice today.
Right I'm off to E-Bay to get a gasket set, I'll update again when I see what state the head is in. Meanwhile anyone know where I can get a replacement head if I need it?
