As Chris said, the odometer is geared off of the speedo itself.
I would guess (having taken one apart before) that the gear that does this
drive is worn and moving the speedo cable has flexed things slightly and put
the gear back into contact for the moment.
The rev counter is probably just a dodgy contact on the connector for the
instrument cluster, you can bend the contacts closed slightly to improve
contact. The rev counter signal is the only green wire.

The Haynes manual shows the speedo cable from the gearbox in the instrument
cluster but nothing about the odometer. Me wiggling the speedo cable must
have moved something to make the odometer work again.
My rev counter is a bit hit and miss, sometimes it will work fine, then not
work.

one cable from the gearbox, which rotates inside a sleeve. the speedo
measures the roational speed of the cable by spinning a magnet and the
oddometer counts the number of rotations through a small gear mechanism.
sounds like the mechanicla side of things is on the blink, possibly just
wear and tear. newer models are all electronic so don't have this problem
the tacho is normally electronic and usually measures the rotational speed
of the alternator.
cheers

Andrew,
That's what i thought, it being one cable not two. Gave the speedo cable a
quick wiggle, started the car rev counter working :) (does not always work)
drove down the street and it was recording miles again. Not sure what I did
but it worked.

Chris,
Not seen a 2+2 but on ford sierra and Xtreme bespoke version of speedo/
odometer, the odometer is driven by the same cable as the speedo not 2
different cables, so it sounds like an internal problem. Likely to be
awkward to fix- probably designed to be hard to modify to prevent clocking !
Good Luck.
