Generally, if there was a JS function that I needed--I would certainly write it/ use it--performance be damned! Running on these faster modern machines my concern over JS was probablyslightly silly.
JS is actually horrifically slow in many cases: http://kineme.net/FeatureRequests/particlesystems#comment-1040You should avoid doing non-trivial stuff in it as much as possible :) Not a silly concern at all.
