OK, this is kinda wild. The problem is not with the rendering at all
but with the Random patch that was being used to generate random
colors for the Particle System.
For whatever reason that is not clear to me these numbers were not
changing when in a QCCompositionLayer. I found a work around which is
to change the setting on each Random patch to "Use Perian Noise" which
seems to work within QCCompositionLayers. Looking at the attributes
for QCCompositionLayer or its superclasses I have not found anything
that seems to be causing this. Hopefully there are some Apple people
here that could say if this is a bug or something I am missing.

for other problems I had rendered it into an image and then back out
to a billboard and the same effect happened. But I had not looked
into anything related to pre-multiply. Thanks.
