id say use an offscreen transparent webview, like we do in the
CogeWebKit plugin:

Animated GIFs can be loaded in a Movie Loader, but then transparent
areas are rendered White (because QuickTime is rad like that?),
while ImageIO properly handles transparent regions (for the first
frame, at least).
Part of the utility in this is that images can be inlined in the
composition (via the Image Importer), making simple animations in a
composition transparent to the user (no additional files necessary,
etc).
