Is it safe to have such a thing out there in compositions floating on the web?

3rd party plugins (using the apple-sanctioned API) will not load in safe-mode environments like safari, itunes, quicktime player. even our unofficial-api plugins usually don't operate in those environments (not because we're unable to do so, but because the demand isn't that high, and apple's safety policy in QC is quite sane overall, and serves a good purpose in a rational manner). So having a rogue composition get triggered from safari or QT Player isn't likely to happen -- the plugin won't get activated, and thus can't do malicious things. Loading such a composition in QC editor, however, could be unsafe.
