I would recommend going through all of the sample code examples on Quartz Composer that are part of the ADC downloads, and looking at all of the Apple documentation. There have also been WWDC videos that are downloadable through iTunes that explain basic concepts.
I would view web-tutorials designed by third parties with healthy doses of skepticism, and the understanding that many times people convey inaccurate information, or make poor choices.
