Gradient fades on disable in RII

This is the background macro from Apples WOTD screensaver that shipped with Leopard. Disabling the Gradient results in a 1-2 second fade of gradient to the off state. Disabling the spheres in same RII patch they go straight off.

Is there something I don't know about RII patch being demonstrated here?
