What QC is exporting is still a QC composition but inside a QT file
wrapper. The QT wrapper lets you set a playtime length, which can be
useful if you are playing a QC composition in Keynote.app for example.
If you place a .qtz file on a slide in keynote it will only play for
30 seconds. If you export as a quicktime movie set to 10 minutes, it
will play for ten minutes.
So the exported file is not a QT reference movie in any sense, it is
still executable code being exported, hence the small size (for a
movie).
What other systems may lack is a plugin or patch that your composition
is dependant on, otherwise .qtz files wrapped as .mov files should
play on any system — 10.5, 10.6, 10.7 specific dependencies not
withstanding.
If you post a comp someone here can see if any plugin/virtual patches
are required on the host system from the console/QC log window.

Noob question about Quartz Composer V4.0. When I click on "Export as
QuickTime Move...", QC exports the composition as a tiny 8k mov
file. It plays, but only on my system, like a 'reference' movie,
where it doesn't actually contain movie data within it. How can I
get QC to generate a movie that contains its data and will play
anywhere? QuickTime Player won't re-export the file or save it as
anything else (all the menu items for that are dimmed out).
