Thanks for the suggestions- the 32 bit mode had solved things in the past, but not this time.
I think the problem is with iTunes and not the OS. Keys and mouse-clicks stopped being read in iTunes around the time I stopped having to use workarounds to load not-safe patches (like video camera input).
