The Billboard patch has a few different modes that are accessible via the settings view of the patch.
A billboard is useful (to me) for the pixel alignment setting, which controls pixel interpolation when they don't fall evenly with the rendering destination, and the native rendering setting that apparently forces how core image computation happens (sometimes?). The built in "modes" are also useful for sizing - I most often use "real size", which renders the input at actual pixel w/h, and "auto height" which presents the width parameter, keeping input aspect ratio consistent with sizing.
