Remmina indeed seems to make this problem go away. So, I've tried the following which also seems to improve the performance: disable **all** visual effects (effectively the same thing RDP is doing I think): Right click computer -> Properties -> Advanced System Settings -> Advanced Tab -> Performance (Settings button) -> Adjust for best performance.
