Have you seen/tried the '-d' option to sntp? Do you have *any* persistent storage on the device? If you will be running ntpd anyway, as long as you can get the time to within 32 years (it might be 64 years but I have not tested this) ntpd will be able to set the time.
You can get the time to within 32 years from the timestamp on the drift file or even using a timestamp from a filesystems or a timestamp stored in a file somewhere.
