Many people regard FreeBSD as preferable to Linux for accurate timekeeping. On my own 133MHz/48MB/FreeBSD 5.4 system I get jitter of the order of ten microseconds. I have seen reports here that setting high clock rates like 1000Hz exacerbates problems.
