Martin,

Rather than drag this out, what I've just done is:

- take a copy of ntp.drift.TEMP
- stop NTP
- delete the offending ntp.drift file
- rename ntp.drift.TEMP as ntp.drift
- start NTP

All seems to be well, and NTP gas restarted without any error entries in 
the even log.  I suppose I must check from time to time that the ntp.drift 
file is updated...
