You may use a direct link between 2 NICs on fiber optic, without
switches. The price of the link is around 250 USD.

And, after all, you may use Ethernet to fiber converters (around 75USD
a piece) and ordinary Ethernet cards. And you'll have the same result.

I had my home wired (cat-5e) a few years ago. I don't see any advantage in going to fiber at this time; certainly not enough to justify the expense.
