ah ha, that made a difference. My server seems to be up and part of the pool. I also found I had to register a lower bandwidth speed or my family complained that the Internet was too slow. I set it at 256K and it seems fine now. Its a bit strange, as speed checks show over 1Mb/s up and 6 MB/s down, but perhaps my ISP was throttling it. I'm paying for a business connection and multiple fixed IP addresses, so running the pool is well within my TOS.
