Because it is a virtual machine. Unless you take specific steps (please consult the VM host software vendor), the host will run VM's at variable effective clock rates.
Historically, the best advice was to synchronise the host and use its specific mechanisms for controlling the time in the guest, and that is what the VMWare documentation used to say. The situation is now more confused, but you would be best advised to follow the vendor's advice.
